From humble beginnings almost four decades ago…

It all started back in 1981 when our owner, a former Veolia [Dalkia, AHS Emstar] General Manager founded MCL Energy. With his background in fuel science and energy services he was able to clinch a key contract with the National Coal Board (NCB) primarily servicing and maintaining multisite coal-fired industrial steam boilers. The industrial steam maintenance business expanded year on year, boasted by clients, some of which are still retained to this day unlike the coal fired steam boilers, the last of which "retired" from our services in the Summer of 2017!

Our initial energy services developed into industrial steam boiler house management and commercial heating services contracts, latterly with AC, HVAC and cooling services.

After further organic growth in the 1990s, we won our first multi-million pound long-term contract with SCA Hygiene including energy centre construction, boiler installation, steam supply and management of the boiler house. Further key installations followed at ICI National Starch & Chemical, Princess Royal Hospital,and Saica Packaging. We ended the 90's with a £million project at Doncaster College to provide a 3.2km gas pipework installation infrastructure and site wide gas plant decentralised project across 10 buildings, along with a BEMS control system and 10 year fixed price heating contract.

Our commercial heating services customer base expanded including fixed price heat contracts, plant decentralisation and Building Energy Management System (BEMS) installations, together with a number of independent schools and commercial building heating and cooling contracts. 

After a period of competitive consolidation (large multi-national entrants, smaller company mergers and acquisitions etc.), we emerged as a small specialist player providing an alternative solution for private and public customers seeking a professional and independent approach to managing their energy, maintenance and technical plant requirements.

The large commercial heating services market place provided further growth opportunities, latterly demonstrated by a long term mechanical and electrical HVAC contract at Stamford Endowed Schools. We continue to develop our customer base.

Today, MCL Energy make extensive use of IT, in terms of computer-based job scheduling, mobile fleet telematics, tablet based forms and business accounting and software packages to deliver and control the service to the customer.

Our recent strategic development included purchasing Mansfield Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Co. Ltd [Established in 1923] in 2011 to develop a complementary service offering air conditioning, refrigeration, process cooling and water chiller services. Our founder, and former MD retired in 2012 and was replaced by current Managing Director, Jason Perry, who has been with the Company over 21 years! He is now responsible for customer satisfaction, strategic direction, employee wellbeing and Company profitability.
